What is a family permit?
The EU Settlement Scheme family permit is a temporary permit that allows family members of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens, who were living in the UK before 31 December 2020, to enter and reside legally in the UK for up to six months.
Who is eligible to apply?
✔ Spouse or civil partner;
✔ Unmarried partner in a long-term relationship established before 31 December 2020;
✔ Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren under 21 years old;
✔ Dependent children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren over 21 years old;
✔ Dependent parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
A family permit is required when:
✔ You wish to join a relative with settled or pre-settled status;
✔ You plan to apply for long-term status under the EUSS (European Union Settlement Scheme);
✔ You have demonstrable family ties with an EU citizen who resided in the UK before the end of the transition period.
❗ Failure to apply in time may result in losing your rights under the Settlement Scheme, and standard visa requirements may apply.
! A family permit is not an ETA.
